Machine Knitting: How to Make Fringing

June 17, 2010
By Sophie Ball

Close up of trimmed fur.

This is another easy machine knitting technique that can be used to create fringe and fur effects very quickly. The technique is very versatile, and is ideal for use with blankets, rugs, and cushions.

  1. Bring forward 9 needles, leave a space of about 12 needles, then bring one more needle forward.
  2. Cast on with the e-wrap method.
  3. Knit as many rows as you need, remembering to use a weight.
  4. Stitch the widest side of the knit onto garment, and trim the single stitch from the other end to make the fringe.

This method can also be used to create a fur effect by coiling and stitching the wider part of the knitting, and then trimming the fringe. Thicker yarns can be used to make a  comfortable rug, and very fine yarns can be used to make an edging for a christening blanket or shawl.
